Internet Connection woes - How to cope with change
It is amazing how we always take things for granted when we are used to having
them. Take for example my internet connection back in the UK. I have a 8mb broadband
connection in the UK that is always on.
My use of the internet is around 3GB of transfer per week, and it costs me just
£15 per month for that service.
Now I am here in South Africa on our travels and attempting to continue business
as normal. We shout about the benefits of working online and having our own portable
business, but sometimes the reality does not match up to the promise
One part of my business is that I do video work for other people, and not just an
autopilot business that runs itself. Usually this is not an issue, as I upload videos
of 20 - 150mb with no problem. Then of course, once people check the video and request
any changes, I then finish the video, and then upload once more.
This usually takes minutes to do on my UK connection.
On our travels in South Africa, we are using 3G connection via a wireless connection
and Vodacom’s USB Modem. So imagine my shock and horror today, when I started to upload
a video for a client that is only 22mb in size, and the connection says, uploads of
around 80kb - and a video upload time of around 5 and a half hours.
I have 3 videos for my client, and in 2 formats, a total of around 120MB of data to
upload.. Hmmm, that could mean over 30 hours to upload the files
Not good..
Plus, to make it better, the connection keeps dropping, so I have to start over.
As we do not have a fixed ADSL line available, for the meantime, this is what I am
left with, but it really makes you appreciate the “old” connection costs and access.
The best part of all is that for just 5GB of data transfer, I will pay £75 or $150
here in South Africa.. a HUGE increase to my business costs.
As always we will find a work around, but it makes you appreciate the creature comforts
of home when you are used to the fast relativey regular connection speeds.
Have a great day
Martin
